The least-discussed yet most important question about artificial intelligence is this:
"Where is my data going?"
In most off-the-shelf AI solutions, the answer is clear: the data goes to the provider's servers. Most of the time, abroad. And once it goes there, control over it largely ends.
When it comes to operational data, this isn't a small technical detail.
Operational data is sensitive data
A fleet's routes, a factory's production figures, a company's accounts, a law firm's case files.
This data is the company's most valuable asset. Data a competitor would want to see, data the regulations require to be protected.
Handing such data to a system whose destination and storage you don't fully know is an operational risk. A risk taken for the sake of speed and convenience, and most often unnoticed.
"Cloud" doesn't automatically mean "outside"
There's a common misconception here: that to use artificial intelligence, the data must necessarily leave.
It doesn't.
When the system is set up self-hosted, the data stays on infrastructure under the company's control. Processing, storage, and access all happen under the same roof. The AI layer comes to the data; the data doesn't have to go to the AI.
This isn't giving up on artificial intelligence. It's using artificial intelligence without compromising data ownership.
Why is this a regulatory matter?
It isn't only a matter of preference. Under KVKK, transferring personal data abroad is subject to specific conditions. Any system that regularly transfers data to a provider abroad must meet these conditions.
Keeping data domestically, on infrastructure under your own control, removes most of this complexity from the outset. Where there is no transfer, transfer compliance isn't required either.
Data ownership is an architectural decision
Data ownership isn't a feature added afterward. It's an architectural decision made on the first day the system is built.
The right setup is this: the data lives on your own servers. Access is authorized, bound to the process rather than to a person. The AI layer works on top of this data, without moving it outside.
The result: a system that benefits from modern artificial intelligence capabilities, yet keeps its data entirely under its own control.
The system is entirely yours, including its data.
